Baby Boy has Dilated Kidneys

Yesterday when I went in for my ultrasound, the doctor discovered that the baby has dilated kidneys. Basically, his plumbing is blocked-up and this can cause some issues for the baby. I don't have much time to write now, but wanted to ask if you might add baby boy van Ormer to your prayers.

Best-Case Scenario: the baby will correct his kidney's while still in the womb, or directly after birth -- all will be well and "normal".

Worst-Case Scenarios: the kidneys continue to enlarge and baby would need to be taken out early for surgery, etc. Or the baby would go full-term and need to have surgery after delivery, or another unknown outcome . . .

The doctor really did not have much to offer me yesterday, but we will know more as time goes on. I am scheduled for my first-ever amniocentesis right after Christmas. (Fun stuff!) Nothing better than a big needle in the gut! Oh boy! He just wants to check and make sure everything else is OK with the baby, though all his other measurements and stats looked really good.

Ahhhhh . . . life. You can't go around it, you have to go THROUGH it! :-)

*If you have ever heard of this problem (dilated kidneys), would you share any info you have -- good or bad. Also, if you have had an amniocentesis before, let me know how it was! Thanks!

Fun stuff ahead . . .

  1. Hey, this happened with Jonah. I guess the technical name is hydronephrosis, if it's the same thing. I was a little worried about it, but it turned out totally fine. The doctor spotted it maybe at around 30 weeks or so, and Jonah had another ultrasound soon after he was born. It had gotten a little worse, and the specialist wanted to do a more invasive test on him. The other option was to wait 3 months and do another ultrasound, and since he seemed so fine and the thing they wanted to test for was not a huge deal if left untreated for a few months, we opted to wait and do another ultrasound later. So we did, and it had improved a lot on its own by then, so they were pleased. We just had a follow-up ultrasound this month and it had totally cleared up, so now we're done with the kidney thing. I don't think this is an uncommon outcome, so I'm feeling good that the same thing will happen for you, but I will definitely keep baby BOY in my prayers. Congrats, by the way! And good luck with the amniocentesis.

  2. Thanks for sharing Dani! Everything I have read says that they often do correct themselves, so hopefully that will be the case! Apparently they were pretty darn enlarged, so the doctor wants to keep a close eye on them. He did mention it is pretty common in boys. I am glad everything worked out well for Jonah . . . it is nice when you can have some relief from any health concerns! Especially when it is with babies! Thanks again for letting me know, it makes me feel better!
