Ouch!

We had an interesting night last night. I was on the phone with my Visiting Teaching companion, we were discussing one of our ladies in detail, and I was trying to find a quiet place. The kids were following me singing very loudly, and I tried to quiet them. Anyhow, they got a little rowdy (more than I have ever seen them) and they were running around like crazy chickens, singing and jumping around, with excess energy. They ran into the toy room and as they did a big toy bin was knocked down and I am guessing it landed on Daniel's head. I checked to see what happened and everyone seemed ok. Daniel was crying just a bit, then he stopped.

I finished my conversation with my companion and then I told Daniel to come to me so I could look at his head (I could see a little blood). He came to me and I found a perfect slice on the back of his head -- it was deep and wide (not good). Just then, Charles came home, and we both decided a trip to the Urgent Care was necessary.

After a quick prayer given by Sammi (at Daniel's request) we were off. We went to one place (which did not have the right equipment) and then we were directed to another location. We got in pretty quickly and they determined that staples were needed. Ick! Daddy stayed with Daniel and I took Sammi and Will out to the waiting room. They told him to lay face down and Charles held him down while the doctor squeezed his head together and put two staples in (with no numbing medicine). Daniel whimpered during the procedure. Then, not two minutes later, he walked out into the waiting room and said, "That was all there was to it!" He seemed strong, and as he kept walking to me, tears came, he felt pain, and the staples. He said, "I don't want staples in my head." He cried for a moment, and then after a lovely blue sucker -- he was all better. It will take 7 days to heal, then we go back, and have them removed. Fun!

I am certain whatever crazy-bug got into them, will not be returning for some time. It seems when playing and having fun -- there is a line that if crossed -- someone will get hurt. I think parents know when the line is coming.

Daniel has been our Urgent Care boy. From a horrible allergic reaction to cashews (choked, rash, could not breath -- went to the ER), an allergic reaction to immunizations (he was swollen and red all over), his arm popping out of socket (the doctor popped it right back in), now he adds head wounds to the list. He is the winner in our family for medical attention.

I am so grateful he is ok. He proved himself strong last night. I know I would have freaked out if someone came at my head with a staple gun! He barely whimpered and did not thrash around or scream (that was what I expected). I was amazed at his strength. He is a good, strong boy. :-)

Also, just so you know, Daddy cut his hair - not me! I do not do the army look! Luckily, it will grow. However, in this case it was a blessing it was so short, I never would have seen the nasty wound.

He is doing fine today. He talks about it every now and then. He mostly does not want anyone to laugh at his staples. He cannot lay on the back of his head either, so he is a little sad about that. All in all, he is doing well, and playing as usual! :-)

  1. That's so scary! Aren't you glad it's on the back of his head and not his face, though? What a brave boy. I can't believe they didn't even numb his head first!

  2. Poor Danny boy. I got teary eyed when I read about Charles having to hold him face down when they were stitching him up. I sure love that little boy. Boys sure like to get into things, huh? : ) oh my, I'm just trying to keep up w/ little Stephen's energy. I'm glad everything worked out for Daniel. No more visiting on the phone for you, eh? : ) Hope your VTing goes well.

  3. I felt bad because I was just trying to help someone in need. Meanwhile, my children were in need of attention. It is a hard balance sometimes.

In this particular instance the kids were not acting normal. They were grabbing onto my ankles and making all sorts of weird noises. Then they were running around, doing a rain dance or something. Normally, they do not mind if I am on the phone. It is like they could sense the intensity of the conversation or something. Maybe they were trying to lighten things up! Ha!

I should take a picture of the bucket that knocked him in the head. It was a plastic bucket that normally holds his GeoTrax, but it was empty, so the lid flew off and a corner of the lid has a sharp piece on it -- I am guessing that was what did it. I did not actually see the event happen, I just heard it.

I was going to stay with Daniel in the "Surgery Room" but I thought it would be a good bonding moment for Daddy/Son! :-) OK, so I was a little weary of being in the room while my son was getting stapled. He really did handle it well.

I remember last year Sammi freaked out about having to put glue on her head wound. There is NO WAY she would have let someone put staples in her head! Me Either!

It seems that Daniel likes to know the facts. I explained in detail what they were going to do and why, and that really seemed to work for him. He really just did what was needed.

I sure love Daniel. He is all-boy but he is also very sweet and sensitive, like his daddy. What a bunch of great guys! :-)
