Family Music Time

Charles and I have been talking about starting family music time for awhile now. So, we went to a music store and purchased a guitar for Charles--playing the guitar is just one of his many talents. :-) When we moved from Alaska we had to sell his guitar, so he has not been able to play for a long time. He is really excited to have the time to pick it up again, and become much, much better at it. Last night we had a music night for FHE. We gathered around the guitar and the kids made instruments out of pots and pans, we had a tambourine, and our voices. It was so great! I loved bringing music into our home, something I value greatly. I love Charles for being willing to practice and learn the guitar.

Last night we began with "Oh Holy Night" and we all sang together. It was cracking me up as Sammi was exploring her voice, and using vibrato. If we practice enough, we may just sing at the ward Christmas party as a family. I would love that. We are even considering purchasing a small keyboard for Christmas. I have always wanted to learn, but I have never had the patience to do it. I think I have the patience now, and I would love for the children to run their tiny fingers across a piano. I think it is such a good thing. I also think a piano is such a great addition to any home. :-) Have I mentioned that I love music? Thanks to Mom and Dad for that.

My mother is a master-blaster pianist. She can play anything. I used to love listening to her jam out on the piano. She raised us at the edge of a piano bench, and I love her for it. She would drop whatever she was doing and play for us as we sang. She would play for everyone and for everything. If there was ever someone who magnified their talents--it is my mom. She substituted as the ward organist for something like 15 years before they finally made it her calling. She is so great. I look forward to my parents coming home from their mission so I can hear her play again. :-)

My dad loves music in a different way. He was never found singing in the church choir, but he adores all types of music. He would often make CD's for us, or turn on a certain song at a certain time. I knew he was telling us how he felt about us through music. He would always have just the right "mood music" playing for parties, dinner time, etc. He took us to musicals and was at all of our concerts. I love my dad so much. I always get warm fuzzies thinking about my parents.

Lots of love Dad and Mom!

I will try and make a video of our family singing time. . .

That is all for now. Lots of love!

  1. Right on, Mari! There is something really magical that happens in your home when you make room for music!! I truly think that music can really be a conduit to the Spirit.

I think that is one of the reasons that Satan has made such an effort to corrupt music. He uses it's power to direct thoughts and emotions in the wrong way. We need to use it in our homes to keep our families connected to the powers of heaven and to each other.

Don't you just feel like hugging someone when you hear the strings in an orchestra? I know that whenever I hear the cello, my heart swells and my eyes well up. It is such a powerful instrument. (It is my goal to learn to play the cello one day!)

The piano can really thrum my heartstrings as can singing. Since my children all grew up into adults and left me, there isn't as much singing going on around here. I miss it.

Kudos to you for your desire and efforts to help your children develop a love for music. (Sammie and Danny singing, "I Am a Child of God" is absolutely priceless and if you just keep them loving to sing, you'll have it made!!) (I've heard Charles on the guitar and he wasn't too shabby! I'll bet he is jammin by now!!)

    LOTS of love!!

  2. As I continue to grow, I realize how amazing it was that we had so much music in our lives growing up. We made time for music, along with plays, Roadshows, etc. It seems like people are so busy now (too busy) so that those kinds of things are not happening any more. I miss it.

When we had the karaoke night here in our ward people loved it, and it brought everyone closer together. Music has the power to do that, more than anything. I love it.

We had been singing in our home a lot, but there is something special about singing with an instrument. It makes a huge difference.

There is also something very romantic about a guitar. It makes Charles just that much more attractive when he plays it. ;-)

I always loved hearing your whole family sing together. I realize now what kind of preparation that must have required! It is different with a bunch of little ones. :-) I just listened to your family the other day on one of the videos we have. You sang, "I saw mama kissing Santa Claus" it was great! :-) So cute.

    Love you Cheryl!

  3. Wow! That was a few years ago! I think that most of the kids were pretty small then! I would love to have a copy of that!

It is challenging getting a bunch of small children (and goofy teenagers) to settle down and learn a song together, but the benefits are so great! They are some of our most cherished memories!!

I agree with you about the guitar being romantic. Hmmm, I wonder if Scott...........

    Lots of love!!
