New Calling

A few weeks ago a member of the Bishopric informed us of our new callings. It was kind of funny because he got really serious and mentioned that they prayed about it, etc. Then he said, " We would like you to serve on the Activities Committee." I thought it was so great that right now, Heavenly Father wants us to plan parties! How great is that? I could not think of a better calling! Especially during this time of year. So, we will be planning parties for the ward and then we have to pull them off and make them exciting and fun! I love it!

For the last 8 years of our marriage we have not been able to be very social. Charles has spent long hours studying and I often did not want to go to parties alone (sometimes I would). Now, we are both ready to party and be involved! We love getting close to people in a ward and I think spending time outside of church meetings is SO important to develop that love and appreciation for others.

I also spent much of my youth working with a few other choice young women and we would put on Dinner Theaters in our ward. It was SO fun preparing and practicing. I have missed doing that. I love the excitement of preparing and even performing. This will be a great opportunity to dust off the old decorating and directing skills and continue to learn and grow. I look forward to doing that with Charles too. He is a master-blaster creator as far as costumes go. I will have to take a picture of the Star Wars costumes he made out of cardboard and duct tape - they were AMAZING! Anyhow, I plan to pull the youth out of the depths of the ward and put them up on a stage and being involved. It gets me excited just thinking about it! Lots of fun!

We have enjoyed watching General Conference! We actually have a channel here that broadcasts it (we are so close to the mother-ship). We lit a fire in the fireplace and gathered around to watch and listen. I think the highlight (of course) was when Joseph B. Wirthlin stood there shaking and then Russel M. Nelson came and stood by him to hold him up - he looked like an angel! I was amazed how Elder Wirthlin continued on, focused, reading his talk that he prepared. As I watched - tears streamed down my face. I thought there could be no greater example of his topic of charity then what was occurring at that moment. As Russel M. Nelson stood there at his side to hold him up in his time of struggle, I wondered what angels are there for us, in our times of need? When we are shaking and trembling, who quickly comes to our side to buoy us up so we do not fall? I loved every minute of that moment. I felt sad for Elder Wirthlin's pain, but I felt great joy as he pressed forward - nothing stopping him. What a tremendous example for us all! I believe it is a moment that will long be remembered.

That is all for now. I love you all and hope you are enjoying this weekend as much as I am!

Love, Me

  1. Mari-

I agree about that moment with Elder Wirthlin and Elder Nelson. What a sweet moment. When he started shaking, I thought, "Someone help him." And no sooner did Elder Nelson come from the shadow to hold him up and be there (in case it was his heart cause he's a heart surgeon). It was very touching.

  2. Mari,
yes, what a wonderful moment, never to be forgotten. I was taking notes on Elder Wirthlin's talk and all the sudden I looked up at the TV and he was trembling. I said: Ray he's really shaking. What a relief to have a disciple of Christ stand there to steady him. I agree we have angels that are seen and sometimes unseen that support us every moment of every day. What really touched me as I watched and prayed for Elder Wirthlin was that he felt so much conviction about his topic (that being the pure love of Christ/charity), that he was going to endure to the end and finish that talk no matter how shaky he was. He pressed forward, steadfast and immovable. He truly testified to my heart of the Savior's love because I could feel it from Him. He seemed to want everyone to understand that the quality greatest of all that members of our church should possess is charity. I love charity! I have pondered and strived to live with the pure love of Christ in my life. I do not want to ever be weary of doing good works (as the scriptures say.) I certainly don't want to be NOTHING. And, if ye have not charity, ye are nothing! Have you ever really pondered that? Well, I encourage you to do so if you haven't. Nothing. What does that mean to you? I want to be something. I want the Lord to know me when He comes again because I have tried to be like Him. I know if we can follow the example of Elder Joseph B. Wirthlin, we can all stand a little taller and be a little better if we fill our hearts with the pure love of Christ. I know His love sustains me daily. I hope you know it too.

  4. I agree with all you about Elder Wirthlin's talk. I was actually thinking along the same lines has mari. What a great example of charity Elder nelson was, going up to help stable his friend so he could finish speaking. I to love charity and the happiness it has brought into my life. I've especially love the times i've been able to help my family ( you guys) and how it's brought us closer together. I want everyone to know, that I to have a testimony that Jesus Christ lives. And that we have a loving Heavenly Father that we will all be able to live with again some day. I love you all so much, and I'm greatful that you're my family. Love you Bethanie

  5. I am so excited that you two are on the activities committee! For the past six years I have been the committee (among other things!) and I loved that calling especially! You two will rock at it AND meet people in the ward and get to work together- it's just a win-win thing all around! Anyhow, have fun and if you need any ideas, my cup overfloweth.

  6. Congratulations on the new calling! It will be so fun!!

Elder Wirthlin's talk was so beautiful. While I watched, I was so touched by the words and the effort he was expending to share then with us!! Tears were dripping from my chin!! I was thinking that here is is talking about love and there was Elder Nelson supporting him in one of the greatest acts of love that I have seen in a long time. He didn't insist that he sit down, he was there, supporting him; physically as well as Spiritually as he knew how important it was for Elder Wirthlin to give his message. What a wonderful, living example of charity!!

WE are so blessed in these days!!

    Lots of love!

  7. Hi everybody!
I just want to thank you all for the best cry I have had in a long time. We got to see conference, (sort of) and it was wonderful. I was so touched by all of your comments. Dad and I are so grateful for all of you and your great spirits. We feel such love when we read what you write to each other and to us. It is the greatest joy in a parents life to have a family that loves each other and to hear them express it to each other. It also gives us an indescribable feeling when you bear your testimonies and show how much you love the Lord. That's why we are where we are and we love you for supporting us. We are truly blessed.

Love to all and we will write more in our Samoan Journal (hopefully sometime this week.)
